Likuliku, Great Resorts in Fiji

Likuliku

To get straight to the point, Likuliku Lagoon, in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji, is one of the nicest resorts I have ever stayed at. Ever. Friendly and excellent staff, quiet, pristine, ocean and island views everywhere, great food, even the buffet (only done on Friday evenings) is incredible and the resort hosts an all-important sense of privacy. However, I appreciated the attention to detail.

I loved that Jese Mucunabitu (classic Fijian music) was playing when I arrived to my room, the word “welcome” was spelled out in palm leaves on my bed, a glass jar filled with fresh-baked, chocolate chip cookies (all gobbled in a single sitting) waited for me along with all the typical amenities I would expect from a high-end resort. While Likuliku has every, one thing it will not have is kids. The property is for adults with a max of two people per room — ideally suited for couples in a romantic setting.

Over the water bungalows at Likuliku in Fiji

Honeymooners may see the over-the-water bungalows and want to splurge. This is not a terrible idea as the setting is incredible with azure water over a coral reef and abundant aquatic life. Snorkeling is as easy as walking out of the bure, down a ladder and settling into the water. Inside, the rooms are tasteful with floor cutouts for sea viewing without leaving the bedroom. However, the resort is a splurge with prices starting at a little over $900US a night. However, this does include delicious meals and non-motorized activities.

For the record, Likuliku is one of the few resorts in Fiji (maybe the only one) that is Fijian owned — by Rosie of Rosie Holidays, who are top-notch tour guides and ground handlers for the past forty years. Legend has it that Rosie still comes to work several days a week to greet new arrivals and is generally beloved by all who meet her.

For full disclosure, I was at Likuliku for only a single day and night. I also did not take advantage of some of Likuliku’s excursions option which include island hopping, snorkeling, water sports. I did, however, enjoy the spa and the inability to remember my life beyond Likuliku’s shores during my stay.
